The Sennen Cove Lifeboat `Norman Salvesen`
launched at 0130 this morning to assist the yacht `Moonshine`
- with engine problems and
unable to sail - two persons on board - one mile north of
Pendeen Lighthouse.
The lifeboat arrived on scene at 0150 - whilst preparing
to receive a tow rope from the lifeboat, the skipper of
the yacht fell overboard. The man was clinging onto the
yacht ; sea conditions made it
far too dangerous to manoeuvre the lifeboat near the yacht
- so two lifeboat crewmembers (Ben George and Dan Shannon)
jumped into the sea and swam to the man`s assistance. Ben
was able to help the man
maintain his position whilst Dan managed to scramble onto
the yacht. Dan then held the man from on the yacht whilst
Ben scrambled aboard - the two men together then managed
to pull the skipper back onto his boat.
This took place in choppy seas with the yacht lying across
the weather and rolling heavily - and in darkness at 2am
though the lifeboats searchlights were used to illuminate
things.
Both Lifeboat Crewmen were unhurt , as was the skipper
of the yacht. The yacht was towed to Newlyn, arriving at
0530 - and the Norman Salvesen returned to the Cove at 0630.
