Sennen Cove R.N.L.I. - Lifeboat Station Reconstruction
|
| Latest News and Views of the Reconstruction Project at Sennen Cove Lifeboat Station |
The Lifeboathouse roof was in a very poor state of repair ; and the crew facilities primitive when , in mid 2000, the R.N.L.I. decided to replace the roof and install new modern crew facilites. At the same time , the dimensions of the building would be altered to accept the next generation of slipway lifeboat - currently known as FSB2 - which it would be reasonable to assume would be allocated to Sennen Cove in due course. Work commenced in mid- September 2000 , with the crew accommodation and ILB accommodation being moved to temporary premesis in the nearby Harbour Car Park. The Station`s Tyne Class lifeboat has remained operational from the boathouse site throughout , necessitating the capability to use both winches and the tipping cradle whilst work continued. The lifeboat has spent most of the winter chained at the top of the launching slipway to avoid damage , and the worst of the dirt and grime. The project is due for completion in early summer 2001 The following images show the latest progress . The Works are being carried out by Symons Construction of St.Ives ; with Posford Duvivier acting as consulting engineeers. |

These images taken on 30th June , with "Norman Salvesen"
levelled in the boathouse in her `normal` position. In conjunction with the
images below, the cavernous dimensions of the boathouse are obvious. The Tyne
comfortably passes under the door bessemer with the mast and df aerial up -
only the two large whip aerials have to be lowered. Roughly speaking , the deck level of FSB2 will be at the top of the Tyne`s guard rails ; and the top of the wheelhouse at the height of the Tyne`s radar scanner. Some idea of the difference in size can be guaged from the images ; and also the very major shoreworks that will be necessary at `conventional` slipway stations to accommodate the boat. |

This series of images was taken on the evening of 28th June.
The internal fitting out is nearing completion , with the crewroom on the top storey on the left , and the viewing gallery being re-instated over the winches. The new high-level sodium lighting system is now working - though not looking very dramatic in the images , the lighting level is superb. |
